CFU

Colony Forming Units: A unit to quantify microorganisms. A sample is taken and distributed over a culture medium which is then incubated. Under ideal conditions, the number of colonies would correspond with the actual number of individual microbes in the original sample. However, colonies form so close together that the number of colonies is actually substantially less. The term CFU was therefore introduced which refers to colonies formed from individual and groups of microorganisms.
