static electricity
The build-up of electrical charge on surfaces and objects which has been caused by friction between materials. Static electricity disturbs certain manufacturing processes and can damage products. It may constitute a hazard in the presence of explosive substances. Avoidance of static electrity is one of the criteria applied in the choice of cleaning equipment and clothing. Surfaces in clean-rooms are often constructed of synthetic materials which are poor conductors and can develop and retain an electrostatic charge. It may be necessary to clean these surfaces with an antistatic agent.
