US Federal Standard 209

Classification according to US Federal Standard 209 is by the number of particles per cubic foot. Classification 1000 denotes 1000 particles per cubic foot, Class 100, 100 particles per cubic foot and so on. This norm was officially replaced in 2001 by the international ISO norms.
